What’s the Buzz?

Lots going on again….

Fom bad to worse for the Yankees at first base after the weekend series with the Red Sox.  Sure the Bombers took 2 of 3 with a “clutch” 9th inning blast by A-Rod, but they lost a little as 1B Doug Mientkiewicz left Saturday’s game with a concussion and a fractured wrist.  He’ll be out for 4 to 6 weeks which means the team is going to have to go with Josh Phelps as their primary guy.  Probably won’t last as they should call up Andy Phillips to platoon with him.  An interesting sight to see yesterday though was Johnny Damon working out with Don Mattingly and taking grounders at first.  I always pushed for Hideki Matsui to start learning the position, but Damon moving over there would suffice.  Melky Cabrera becomes and even stronger play now as he’ll get the starts out in centerfield. Bumps and Bruises

Friday, June 1st, 2007

Well, the big one here today is Yankees DH Jason Giambi.  Told yesterday that he was going to miss atleast three weeks with his foot issues, reports out of the Big Apple this morning say that he could actually miss the rest of the season.  He was supposed to have a cortisone shot this morning, but apparently they found that he had a partially torn plantar fascia tendon and it could be a lot longer than anticipated.  Now before you go freaking out (c’mon…his numbers weren’t that good), keep in mind that others (Chipper Jones comes to mind) have suffered through similar issues and were not lost for the year. Benitez on the Move…….again

Friday, June 1st, 2007

I feel like a deer in the headlights as I watch the bullpen movement for the Florida Marlins.  It’s like a train wreck.  So awful to look at, yet I just can’t seem to pry my eyes away.

The Florida Marlins traded away reliever Randy Messenger to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for beleaguered closer Armando Benitez throwing yet another gallon of gasoline onto the fire that is the Marlins pitching staff.  According to manager Fredi Gonzalez, Benitez will not be put in the closer’s role immediately.  Kevin Gregg will remain in that spot for now…atleast until his already short leash gets yanked.  If there is a shake-up…..or should I say when there’s a shake-up in the pen, I’m sure Benitez will get the opportunity.

And don’t forget about recently activated Henry Owens.  Not likely to get the save opps from the get go here, but he was fairly solid in his short stint as the team’s closer until his shoulder flared up.  This whole situation has committee written all over it.

Continue to use Gregg, stash Benitez away if you can, you can probably, truth be told, ditch Owens, close your eyes and hope for the best.

For the Giants, it’s time to grab reliever Brad Hennessey.  He’ll be the first choice to get the save opportunities and should be a solid play if he holds down the job.

What about Messenger?

Exactly.  What about him?
